Should I buy refurbished ophthalmic equipment or invest in new?

This is a frequent question. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on risk tolerance, budget, how much uptime matters, and what you are using the equipment for.

New

Lower upfront cost; ability to get higher-spec device for same budget; sometimes lower depreciation.

Refurbished / Used

Higher risk of breakdown; may have fewer or no warranties; parts may be hard to source; older technology; possible performance or calibration drift.

When refurbished makes sense

  • For training purposes, screening centers, or outreach (not full surgical / high stakes).

  • If you find a good deal with warranty, service, and local support.

  • If you’ll upgrade soon; using the refurbished device to bridge until you can buy new.

What to check if buying refurbished

  • Age of the equipment; cumulative usage hours; maintenance history.

  • Calibration & testing; that all key functions work.

  • Availability of spare parts and whether vendor offers warranty / AMC even for refurb.

  • Whether software is upgradable.

  • Whether imaging / diagnostic accuracy has been preserved.

If those are satisfactory, refurb can be good value, if not always go for a new one.

Tip: check with the company first if they have any second hand machines in stock, this will reduce the risk of frauds and increase transperancy in terms of use and maintance of the machine.
